Effectively Using Photography in Web Design

Web design and photography go hand in hand. Many popular websites now feature a single photograph as a large banner or background to immediately engage and intrigue site visitors. Text-only sites are an eye sore. People lose interest if they are just staring at a wall of text, photography is important.

Photography in Web Design: The right photo can completely elevate the look and feel of your website. However, picking the right photo to suit your idea can be quite a chore. Here are some pointers to help you choose the best possible photograph.

Contrast Check: You need to pick a photograph that works well with the visual feel of your content. Choose the right contrast for your image. It should stand out on its own, but should never overshadow the other elements on the page. For example, if you have a light colored background; always have dark colored elements in the foreground and vice versa. The photograph should contribute aesthetically to design ideas and not be the entire idea on its own.

Image Quality: Given that you will be using high-resolution pictures, you also need to consider the theme of the pictures. Ideally, your photographs should be on par with the written content. For example if your website is about flowers, placing attractive pictures of flowers in the background would be acceptable. How the image is taken will also affect the quality. It is best to use high definition cameras that provide steady capture and a rich output.

Is the Image Relevant: Relevance in web design is one of the most underrated factors. The designer should include photographs that are directly related to the idea you are selling. In cases dealing with more obscure themes like car insurance or mortgages, the designer can choose images that are symbolically relevant to the idea.

Sizing Issues: Big images are becoming the selling points of popular websites. The idea of including a single high- definition photograph in the banner or background is one of the most popular current web design trends.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Choosing the right picture for your website will ultimately simplify communication with your customers.
